F1 2023: Verstappen takes pole in Bahrain, Hamilton struggles
Red Bull's Max Verstappen claimed a dominant pole position for the Bahrain Grand Prix, while seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton endured a difficult qualifying session.
Verstappen was in imperious form throughout qualifying, setting a time of 1:30.577 to finish nearly four tenths clear of his nearest rival, Ferrari's Charles Leclerc. Carlos Sainz Jr. was third for Ferrari, ahead of the Mercedes duo of Nico Rosberg and Valtteri Bottas.
Hamilton, who won last year's race from pole position, could only manage seventh place after struggling with his car's handling. The Briton was over half a second off the pace of his teammate, Rosberg, and will need to make a strong start on Sunday if he is to challenge for the victory.
Verstappen's pole position is his first since the 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix and gives him a strong chance of winning his first race of the 2023 season. The Dutchman will be confident of converting his pace into victory, especially after Red Bull looked so strong in practice.
Leclerc and Sainz will be hoping to challenge Verstappen on Sunday, but they will need to find some extra pace if they are to do so. Ferrari has looked strong in testing, but Red Bull appears to have the edge at the moment.
Hamilton will be hoping to bounce back from his disappointing qualifying session and challenge for the podium on Sunday. The Briton has a good record at the Bahrain International Circuit, so he will be confident of putting in a strong performance in the race.
